Agnes Lilly’s 1914 Confessional Letter

** DRAFT; 7/24/21 **

Introduction

“Breath-taking” is the only phrase worthy of the following handwritten letter from 24-year old Agnes Lilly Tillmann to her prospective decade older husband Baron Jan Carel “Bart” van Panthaleon van Eck.

In a remarkable missive Agnes Lilly rolls out the carpet of her life on 28 lettersheets handwritten front and back (56 pages!), dated March 17, 1914, a little more than three months before their wedding. The girl comes clean.

“Bart” van Eck & Agnes Lilly Tillmann, Mangels Ranch, perhaps a month or two before their wedding on June 30, 1914. Tillmann Family Archives.

Fairly warned, yes, but the Baron was not intimidated, and their marriage lasted 50 years. I’m not sure my grandmother would favor publishing her most private, intimate confessions. But that’s the price of immortality.
